Outdoor chess is chess in large format for the garden, schoolyard or hotel terrace. Here you will find garden chess sets with kings from 30 cm (medium) up to 91 cm (giant chess) in weatherproof plastic that takes sun and rain, and boards in nylon or fabric with squares from 15 cm up to 61 cm.

Choose the size by the space. A set with a 30 cm king plays on a board of about 1.5 metres and suits a patio; giant sets with a 60–91 cm king need 3–5 metres and are what you see in parks and at campsites. Boards are sold separately from the pieces, so check that the square size matches the king’s base.
The pieces are hollow and easy to carry but stand firmly; several models can be filled with sand or water against wind. Winter storage: the pieces tolerate cold, but the board is best kept indoors.
