Size is given as the king’s height. 3.75 inches (95 mm) is the tournament standard and fits boards with 55–58 mm squares; 3.5 inches (90 mm) fits 50–55 mm; 3–3.25 inches (76–83 mm) fits 45–50 mm; 2.5 inches (65 mm) belongs on small boards and travel sets. The rule of thumb is that the king’s base should be about 75–80 % of the square.
